Shhhhh...

Don't tell anyone that I'm sitting on my fanny. We are scheduled to go on a camping trip first thing in the morning and it's All Hands on Deck here in the Westie Home. It never ceases to amaze me how much work it takes to ensure the survival of 6 people who will be away from home for a few days. By the time the process is completed we all need a vacation.... from each other. :D Just kidding. Sorta.

I think the process would go a trillion times smoother if things like THIS wouldn't happen, though:

What you are seeing here....
happens to be the contents of my freshly purged closet.
A closet that a mere week ago...

held approximately 3 LARGE garbage bags full of extra stuff. After purging it, I have been so very happy. I have even been known to walk in there and just sit. On the floor. Because I can.

About an hour ago, I heard this hellacious CRASH. After making sure each of my children still had all of their limbs, I discovered the above. Apparently, the shelving decided that it HATES me and did a little purging of it's own.

Perfect. And I deeply appreciate the timing, too.

What stuns me more than anything, is that I probably lightened it's load by about a 100 lbs last week, so why now? WICKED shelving.

Now that I've got you in my horrid closet, let me ask you, what in the world should I do with some books, pictures, and records that were given to me, by my Dad.... some of which belong to my great-grandparents? We are talking late 1800's here. If I were closer to my home state (Pennsylvania), I would donate it to our town's museum, but I'm not. So do any of you have any ideas? My shelving thinks it should just be destroyed.

Back to packing...

Neat old photos can look nice on the wall in a family room, etc. Otherwise, box, label, and tuck them away. That stinks about your shelving. Sometimes it drives me crazy that almost everything I do doesn't STAY done, so I am feeling for you! You had me worried for a minute when you were bragging on your purged closet and showing us those pics- I was thinking, "ummm, that doesn't look very organized..."

I'm always afraid my shelves are going to do the same thing. They are overloaded. Sorry I don't have any advice about your things. Still trying to figure out what to do with mine.

Even with the spill your closet is still neater than mine. I refuse to take picture of my closet. The problem is...it's too small. I need a closet the size my bedroom and then all would be well. LOL You should probably keep those photos, you might miss them if you get rid of them.

Have an awesome day,
Krista

Get it all scanned then send the originals to relatives or find a museum in PA to donate to. Just 'cause you don't live there doesn't mean they can't get it.

One thing I discovered last year when I purged my attic, was that family treasures are priceless. I pulled down lots of things I had boxed up, and have displayed them nicely in my home (replacing decor that meant nothing). Now when I look at those items, I'm reminded of the special people who owned them.

Pictures, I'd keep. But documents...I think I'd scan those & send them on.

Hey there -
The historical society of whatever county he was from would probably LOVE the stuff, or perhaps even a local library up there, especially if any of the photos contain local landmarks.

Gayle~I would choose what really has meaning and you like and use them. The rest I would donate. Maybe ship it little by little to your home town. They would appreciate. You can send it in your family's name and it will be preserved forever.

I hope you had a good time camping. Sorry to see what happened in your closet.
