Back to the Pyramid

Nothing like riling a bunch of Mama's up and then walking away, huh? :D

Anyway, thanks for all of your input/love below. I did put our outcome in the comments somewhere, if you're wondering how it all turned out.

Moving along to a subject that I kind of hate... Diet and Exercise. (By the way, I PROMISE I'm not on some warped mission called "How to Lose Your Readers in 10 Days" or something. Contrary to the fact that I left a post up here for that long about disciplining children, THEN I come busting up in here with talk about the old D&E, I DO want y'all to stick around.) ;)

Ahem....so, Diet and Exercise.

Over my Holiday break, it came to my attention that I, Gayle, have a cholesterol level of 272. Now, if you are like me 3 weeks ago, that number will mean nothing, so I will go ahead and clue you in to the fact that this is a VERY HIGH number. "Very high", in the cholesterol world = Not So Good. Think Cheerios commercial.

I have to tell you that this numero pretty much shocked the crap of me. Truth is, I am not overweight....well, there is the Muffin Top thing, but I'm still embracing that....and honestly, my diet isn't that bad. Bottom line, I've inherited some rotten genes on the cholesterol front. So, at 33, yours truly is officially on cholesterol medication.

It's not a huge deal, but it has definitely kicked me in the hindquarters to put the lockdown on my family's eating and moving habits. The great news is that I don't hate my fruits and veggies and neither does Mark. ALL food has equal opportunity with us. We're PC like that. However, it's a few of our kids that have a little enmity with the veggies. So, being the bibliophile that I am, I did what came naturally, I hopped on over to Amazon and searched for Nutrition for Kids. Here is a cute, but informative book that I received last week, so I wanted to pass the info on to you.

Sorry, I don't have a clue how to make the image a link (I would love to learn that little trick, though), so here is the direct link, if you're interested: Janey Junkfoods Fresh Adventure I have a few other books that are on their way, including a small curriculum called How to Teach Nutrition to Kids that got some pretty awesome reviews.
As far as the Moving Issues...well, it is me, and not the children, who holds the intense aversion. In other words, me no likey. Yet, me no wanna DIE, so off to the park we go a few times a week. I've been loading up my MP3 player with tons of sermons from here, and a bunch of Praise and Worship music so that my mind is is being taken off the "deed". So far, so good.
It really is perfect timing that all of this came into play when it did, because, HELLO, January seems to be THE Diet and Exercise month. Everything you see is on healthy eating habits and staying fit. Works for me.
Anybody else?

Yes, I am doing my January pep talk- I think my cholesterol is fine, and I am usually fairly active, though lately I have been more less so. I could lose about 15 to be in good shape as far as my sports go and stuff, but I seem to have lost will power when I had my last child! Glad you are taking care of yourself, Gayle. I find that music helps take the pain out of running.

How funny! I mentioned the old food pyramid in the Siesta post that will go out tomorrow...

Did you receive your plates? I hope you liked them!

Love,

Yeah, my cholesterol was about 50 points higher than it was last year. I need to get more activity and green stuff in my diet.

Of course, I'm also trying to figure out how "weight-bearing" helps osteoporosis when "weight-bearing" caused my stress fracture! And doing my best not to repeat it!

I'm on my way to gaining weight again so I'm no help....you could use Gayle B.'s trick of sneaking veggies into stuff by grating/pureeing them (for the kids). Also, have you ever listened to Marc Driscoll? He's awesome and you can download his podcasts free in itunes.

Bummer.

Any BP issues to go along with the cholesterol?

Better to find out now, than to live with it and the damage for a long time, IMHO.

I, too, hate the exercise. But it's got to happen if my hind parts are going to fit properly in my pants. At 35, it just doesn't happen easily any more. :(

Well - I made it to the GYM last night. I HOPE to keep it up. I really do feel better when I exercise. I really do. I really do.
Sorta like - I think I can , I think I can, I think I can.... LOL

Awwww, man...the ol' high cholesterol gene. My hubby got it too and has been on meds for a few years now (he is 40).

I inherited the ol' "your thyroid will die at 30" gene. Getting "older" sure is a bummer.

Hmmm...I would be curious to see what my cholesterol is???

I am on the healthy diet and excersise bandwagon...so far so good, but it has only been what, 6 days...seems like an eternity! ;-)

272 - YIKES!
You know David's mom... kind of like you... 97 pounds soaking wet... she has high cholesterol too. I hope the meds and lifestyle changes work well.
I'm gonna check out the kiddo stuff you mentioned. I so desire to train my children to be healthy eaters. Kind of difficult since I've always been under the impression that green M&Ms are a green vegetable!
Much love,
Krista

My hubby takes that kind of med now for high cholesterol. Seems that his thyroid is underactive. Yah, that one medical condition that every overweight woman claims to have..he really has it!

Really random, belated post. But I ran across your blog through LPM, found it fascinating and then I read Muffin Top. Laughed so stinkin' hard. It sounds so much better than 'love handles'. Thanks for the laugh and the reality check!
